Learning Styles of Boys

Learning Styles of Boys

I am a firm believer in different styles of learning. For instance, are you one of those people that has to read something for yourself rather than have someone read to you? If so, you are probably more of a visual, or possibly auditory learner. When you are trying to commit something to memory, do you find yourself pacing around? Kinesthetic learner. Now, these are very simple examples, and no where near complete, but just an illustration. Everyone learns differently.

Boys and girl have different learning styles. Not that they CAN’T have similarities, but in general, boys and girls acquire information differently. Well, wouldn’t most people know that anyway? Our schools certainly haven’t shown that they understand it. We know that men and women think differently and excel in different areas, so wouldn’t it make sense to think the same about young boys and girls?

The site, Boys and Schools:Improving the Health, Education, and Well-Being of Boys, has a wealth of information for parents of boys. I encourage you to visit and read some of their articles if you are a parent of a boy. A few of the most interesting items are the fact that the increased level of testosterone in boys cause them to be more aggressive, competitive, assertive, and self reliant than girls; girls hear better and teachers may need to use louder voices to reach boys; neurotransmitters in the brain differ between boys and girl, showing a clear difference in how boys and girls process information. Boys don’t do as well in reading as girls, but excel at math skills and other spatial type skills.

So, even from this short list, doesn’t it make sense that if boys were taught to their strengths that they could excel at a rate equal to girls? Believe me, as a mother of boys, I would love to know that my boys have an equal chance to achieve their very best in school. Yet, I know that my boys are bored. They don’t want to read Sarah, Plain and Tall, but they love Diary of a Wimpy Kid. They love studying about dinosaurs, and learning about pirates of old. Things that are exciting! My oldest scored in the top 5% of 4Th graders in the nation in math, on a particular achievement test, but just average in reading. Give him reading problems in math, and he can do them lickety split.

One way to teach children to their strengths is the use of educational technology. Using computers and software in the classroom. Allowing testing on the computer, creating book reports using PowerPoint presentations, playing computer games to teach math concepts. Honestly, in this digital age I am really surprised that it is not more common. Our schools are still using textbooks that look just like the ones I used as a kid. Give them a CD-ROM to use at school, or at home, with animations, or real video. Let them write science reports on the Discovery Channel show, Man vs. Wild, or One Way Out. I can’t tell you how much my boys have learned about animals and the outdoors from Bear Grylls, and energy and momentum from Jonathan Goodwin. And, how about the Planet Earth series? On TLC, there are lots of things to be learned about society, cooking, and even fitness. I know that these are things that they will remember for many years! It is exciting and interesting to them.

Using online learning games is a great tool for children of any age. They are fun and it may not even seem like they are “learning”. For years I have played games online with my children. My 3 year old loves alphabet games, counting games, and even spelling games. My oldest, 10 years old, still likes to go on sites and build virtual robots or building, creating cities, or even dinosaur environments. Our 8 year old likes to do virtual puzzles. They are all learning! The concepts that are presented are things like same/different, big/small, mirror images, different types of environments, among many others.

I just get really frustrated that the American educational system is so far behind the world. We don’t use the wonderful resources that are available to us. Okay, I know that not every classroom has a computer for every child. But, there is usually a computer lab available, some students have their own, and most teachers have at least one computer in their rooms. Find new and fun ways to utilize the technology that is available. Be flexible in how you will accept work that is to be turned in. I have heard from teachers time and time again, “but, it’s not fair to let one student do their work one way, and others another way”. If you are allowing it because it fits their needs more specifically, how is that not fair? Parents don’t treat their children all the same. Employees are not treated all them same, some make more money for one reason or another. There is no fair or not fair. Just equal, but different, opportunities. What works best for each individual.

How can we tolerate the fact that our boys are being allowed to fall behind, when the fix would be so easy to achieve?

I am a full time working mom of 3 boys. I write articles about parenting a family of boys on topics such as education, health, fitness, entertainment, and connecting. Visit me at http://1girlparadise.blogspot.com

Magnetic Power Generator

Magnetic Power Generator

The magnetic power generator is a free energy generator which uses magnetic force and magnets to induce a perpetual motion. Here, the generator runs by itself continually without stopping and creates completely free electrical energy that can be utilized by an individual for various purposes. The perpetual motion in the generator refers to a device which runs indefinitely, producing huge amounts of energy.

The magnetic power generator adopts repulsive and attractive power of natural magnets in order to induce the motion into flywheel. This flywheel is in turn attached to a small turbine through a gear assembly, and when the wheel runs it drives the turbine, thus, producing electricity.

Another feature of the Magnetic power generator is its very easy and simple-to-build functionality. Any individual having basic mechanical knowledge can construct a DIY magnetic power generator by referring to various blueprints and guides accessible on the internet. Otherwise, he can purchase one of the magnetic generators available in the market at an affordable price. In addition, these power supplements save about 20% to 50% on energy bills. Once when these generators are assembled correctly, they can run for long periods of time producing free electricity.

The power generator can efficiently be used as a power supplement in houses without any cost. Further, the generator doesn’t produce any harmful by-products like gas and it is eco friendly too. So it is best for each and every one to opt for this alternate source of electrical energy which is completely safe to operate and is econmical.

You can now build your own magnetic power generator with the MagniWork Blueprints. These blueprints will show you exactly how to build your own magnetic power generator in easy step by step instructions.

2: Material and Methods.

3: Result and Discussion.

4: Conclusion:

Introduction:

The incidence of sudden death of broiler birds above 40 days suddenly increased in the month of August-September 2008 in Kathmandu valley. Birds that were presented for post-mortem examination in Central Veterinary Laboratory Tripureswor Kathmandu were usually found dead on their backs with wings out-stretched. Incidence rate was recorded between 1.5 to 2.5% of the flock. The mean mortality due to sudden death syndrome was 1.3 – 9.6% and mortality usually occurs after 6 week of age. There are no outstanding gross lesions on post mortem examinations, except for muscle oedema, pulmonary, renal and liver congestion, and congestive spleenomegaly.

ABSTRACT:

Penicillium spp., Aspergillus spp., Candida spp, E.coli, Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus spp. were the usual organisms isolated from culture samples of liver, lung, spleen and Proventriculus. Reduction of mortality was achieved by feed restriction, supplementation of glucose containing electrolyte, liquid toxin binder, Immunomodulaters, acidifier and antibiotic therapy. The condition seems to be related to fast growth rate. A practical approach seems to use diets with 5-7% reduction in nutrient density. The provision of more space and supportive treatment with anti-stress medicine may also be beneficial.

Material and Methods: Background of outbreak of Sudden Death Syndrome in Kathmandu Valley.

During the first week of August 2008 there sudden increase in mortality of broilers above 3-6 week age (Table 1). There are no premonitory signs. Just before death, birds appear normal and it is common to observe the birds feeding, drinking or walking normally. Then suddenly, affected birds exhibit clinical signs such as extending their neck, squawk and start wing beating as well as leg extension before falling back on their back and use to die suddenly. Most of birds in flock were diagnosed as suffering from diseases like C.R.D,Coccidiosis,Gout,Lichchi heart disease, and were treated with using drugslikeTylosine,Cholestin,Enroxin,Gentamycine,Anticoccidiostates,MultivitaminBcomplex and liver tonics alternately but there was no improvement of flock health rather there was continuous but death of birds were recorded in every flock .

Postmortem finding of SDS birds:

Postmortem examination of birds that died of sudden death syndrome revealed showed no outstanding gross pathology. All birds were well fleshed, with muscle oedema and general pulmonary congestion and oedema. Feed was present along the entire digestive tract and the gall bladders of birds are usually empty. The liver and kidneys were usually slightly congested and have patchy subcapsular haemorrhage. Usually, the proventriculus contains a milky fluid, and intact food particles are present in gizzard. Congestive splenomegaly was observed in almost all birds. All these post mortem observations conform to the descriptions of the syndrom made by Ononiwu et. al. (1979).

Laboratory Finding of Mycobiota and Microbiota of Postmortem Tissue samples:

A total 86 tissue samples of lung, Liver, spleen, Proventriculus and gizzard, were collected during postmortem examination and were subjected for both bacterial and mycological culture. Results of microbiological examination done are given in Table 2.

Treatment and Preventive measure given to the rest of birds in flock:

All birds remaining in flocks were subjected to restricted feed up to 8-10%, and feed to twice daily only. Supplementation with glucose containing electrolyte, liquid toxin binders, Immunomodulaters, and simple broad-spectrum antibiotics were provided in water. Vitamin B complex supplementation was totally withdrawn. All birds remaining in all affected farms responded well to the above management and there were marked improvement in the overall condition of the flock.

Discussion.

Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) is an acute heart failure disease that affects mainly male fast growing chickens that seem to be in good condition. Although a common condition in fast growing birds, the pathogenesis remains unclear (Ononiwu et. al. 1979). Cardiac arrhythmias are involved in the pathogenesis of SDS with ventricular arrhythmias (VA) being the most common observation representing premature ventricular contractions and fibrillation (Olkowski and Classen, 1997; 1998). It has been reported that broilers fed with high vitamin D3 diet above the recommended levels in an attempt to prevent commonly occurring leg problems were 2.5 fold more likely to succumb to acute heart failure and die of SDS (Nain et. Al. 2007). SDS was also experimentally induced by feeding diets containing the mycotoxin moniliformin that resulted to cardiac injury with subsequent alterations in cardiac electrical conductance (Reams et al, 1997) suggesting the possible role of chronic mycotoxicosis to the causation of SDS. Other implicated causes of SDS include continuous artificial lighting (Ononiwu et al, 1979b), deviations in dietary calcium and phosphorus (Scheideler et al, 1995), feeding crumble-pellet diets (Proudfoot et al, 1982), dietary fat content (Rotter et al, 1985) and feeding frequency Bowes et al, 1988). The latter recommendation of restricted feeding supports well the previous observation that abdominal fat deposition increases the risk of SDS such that restrictions on calorie:protein ratio decreases the incidence of SDS (Mollison et al, 1984).

Conclusion and Recommendation:

The present investigation indicates that broilers in good body weight condition when not harvested timely and remain in poultry shade for prolonged periods suffer stressful events and even sudden death. Also, it is possible that the increased humidity and hot season favors the growth of mold and fungus in stored feeds increasing the risk of birds to Mycotoxicosis. This incidence of sudden death syndrome in birds in Kathmandu Valley was reported for the first time and needs to be investigated further.

Types of Job Interview Questions

Types of Job Interview Questions

The list of possible interview questions can be quite large and overwhelming. Fortunately, there are only really five different types of interview questions. This structure helps put these questions into a manageable framework. The five different types of interview questions:

1. Resume-Related Questions (You Questions)

2. Qualifications for Job Questions

3. Behavioral Questions

4. Case Interview Questions

5. Personality Questions

Resume- Related Questions (You Questions)

This group of questions can be described as “You” questions because they tend to center around what “you” have done. Sample Interview questions could include:

• Tell me about yourself?

• What did you major in at college?

• What did you do in this position?

The main focus of these questions is to try to find out whether your resume information is accurate and whether you have exaggerated or been modest about your credentials. This is most often done by asking questions based on the information shown in your resume.

Job Qualification Questions

These questions will be generated mainly from the job description and may overlap somewhat with Resume-Related questions. They are designed to see if you have the experience or qualifications for the position at a general level. They will ask you sample interview questions like:

• Have you ever managed a team before?

• Do you have any experience with conflict resolution?

• Have you ever given a presentation to external customers?

Behavioral Questions

These questions try to specifically determine whether you have the appropriate level of experience or qualifications for the position. They tend to go deeper than Job Qualification Questions by having you provide answers based on your prior work experience. These questions provide you with a basic problem scenario and expect you to be able to answer it based on a prior work experience example. Sample Interview questions could include:

• Tell me about a time you used your conflict resolution skills?

• Tell me about a project where you implemented a process improvement idea?

• Give me an example of a time you failed to complete a project on time and how you went about correcting the issue?

These questions can take on the form of a positive or a negative and so it is a good idea to have thought out ahead of time examples that you will want to use. It is also a good idea to try to identify before hand what are likely to be the skills they will base their behavioral questions on. For example, a salesman might expect to get behavioral questions based presentation skills. One such question could be give me a time when you gave a successful presentation to a client or for customer service skills, tell me about a time when you used your customer service skills to help keep an upset customer with the company.

Case Interview Questions

These types of questions tend to be tailored toward client focused positions like consulting and sales. They essentially involve providing you with a list of facts surrounding a company problem and ask you how to address the issue. Depending on the position, this may include doing things like performing mathematical computations or creating presentation aids. Regardless of the position, you can expect to have to present your findings and answer follow-up questions.

The purpose of these types of interview questions is to see how you think, whether you can perform under a stressful situation and, determine whether your personality is a good fit for the team. These interview questions usually are conducted on a one on one basis; however, you can also answer these questions as part of a group as a way for some companies to judge your interpersonal skills.

Personality Questions

These types of questions usually take on two forms. One form is a formal standard test that asks you a lot of questions about what types of things you prefer or would choose to do based on a list of options. The second form of personality questions are the informal type that can occur anywhere in the interview process and are geared towards determining if you are a good personality fit for the position. Sample interview questions could include:

• What was the score of the Cowboys game last night?

• What did you think of the last episode of American Idol?

The purpose of these questions is to see if you are well rounded enough to be able to talk to a prospective client about a general topic like American Football or a popular television show.

By getting a basic familiarity of these types of sample interview questions, you will help reduce your overall learning curve. Although interview questions tend to get most of the attention in other interviewing guides and books, you should instead divide your focus between all aspects of the interview process. By having a more comprehensive outlook on the interview process, you will tend to have better results by appearing more well-rounded and professional to your interviewers throughout the entire interview process.

Wide Angle Lenses – Five Tips for Photos With More Impact

Wide Angle Lenses – Five Tips for Photos With More Impact

Photographers shopping for a new digital camera are bombarded with information about the power of modern zoom lenses. “This camera has eight-times optical zoom and up to twelve times digital zoom but this camera has twelve times optical and…” You know the drill.

A powerful telephoto lens is terrific, and essential if you are shooting lots of sports photography, wildlife photography, or any photography that requires you to capture your subject from a distance. But with all the marketing that goes on around telephoto power, you could be forgiven for believing there is little value in a good wide-angle lens.

This is simply not the case. In fact, if you take a lot of travel photos, you may find that your powerful telephoto rarely gets a workout. As a landscape photographer, I use my wide-angle lens a lot more. I can tell you right now that even though the wide-angle lens makes everything smaller, it can create images with massive impact if you use it well.

So here are my five tips for creative photography with a wide-angle lens.

Wide-Angle Photography Tip #1. It Really Is A Wide Angle. When using a larger lens, you narrow your field of view considerably, so if you focus on a subject in the foreground you really don’t capture much of the background. On the other hand, with a wide-angle lens you capture a much wider field of view. Your foreground subject may still be the focus of the image, but you can make use of the background to add interest to the picture as well.

As a result, your picture can tell more of a story. Instead of a photo that says “Here is a shot of my kids” your photo can say “Here is a shot of my kids at the beach, you can see what a beautiful day it was and I managed to capture a sailboat going by as well.”

Wide-Angle Photography Tip #2. Depth Of Field. The wide-angle lens has a much stronger depth of field than a larger lens. Not only can you make a feature of both foreground and background, you can keep everything in focus while you are at it. To achieve the same result with a larger lens, you may have to close the aperture, which means slowing the shutter speed, which means using a tripod…a lot of exta effort. After all that, the depth of field may still not be as strong as if you had used your wide-angle lens.

Wide-Angle Photography Tip #3. Perspective. Perspective is exaggerated by a wide-angle lens, so it makes long objects seem even longer. If you are shooting a fence-line, a jetty, railroad tracks, a road…anything that stretches away into the distance, the wide angle lens can really give your photo a boost. The result will be a truly three-dimensional sense of depth. The strong lines of the composition will lead the viewer into the picture, so they feel they are not just looking at the photo, but right into it.

Wide-Angle Photography Tip #4. Powerful foregrounds. The exaggerated perspective of the wide-angle lens makes objects at different distances seem much further apart than they really are. Foreground objects may seem a bit smaller, but objects in the background can seem many miles more distant. As a result, the wide-angle lens is excellent for adding impact to a foreground subject. You can stand very close to a person (or a tree, whatever) and they will appear to tower over the scene in the distance. This is the opposite of a telephoto lens, which tends to bring the background into prominence.

Wide-Angle Photography Tip #5. Putting It All Together. All the above tips are helpful by themselves, but by putting them all together you have the power to create photos that really grab the eye of the viewer. There is not enough space in a short article to outline all the ways you can use these tips, so I will give you one example that puts all the strengths of a wide-angle lens to good use.

Imagine an old rustic farmhouse, with a striking cloud formation behind it. Your telephoto lens might fit in just the farmhouse, and a standard lens might fit in the house and the sky.

With a wide angle lens, you could walk down the driveway and look for some special detail (maybe a rusty old mailbox) to create a more interesting composition. If you stand near the mailbox, it will have prominence in the composition, but you will still have a clear shot of the farmhouse and the sky in the background. Even better, the strong depth of field makes it easy to keep everything in focus. The exaggerated perspective will make the driveway seem longer, adding a three-dimensional impact to the picture. If you do it well, the first thing that catches the eye will be the mailbox, but the driveway will lead the viewer into the distance, to appreciate all the detail of the background as well.

So there you have a quick introduction to the creative use of a wide-angle lens. I hope this little article does more than just just spark your imagination. Reading about it is not nearly as exciting as doing it…so grab your camera and start snapping!

Music Education Resources and Tips for Teachers

Music Education Resources and Tips for Teachers

Music education has been included in many curricula in different nations around the globe. However, since not all students are musically-inclined, not all of them are motivated to learn music.
